The First Edition of the Carl Robinson Brand for Wallquest is a culmination of 25 years of experience designing and manufacturing wallpaper for the residential market. Like my father before me, and his father before him, wallpaper design has been a vehicle for me to express my inner creativity as well as a reflection of the time in which we live. Design evolves from ideas, who we are, the way we live, where we come from, in other words, the "Legacy" of design.
I truly enjoyed creating this collection, from the couture style embroideries, surface printed designs, fabrics, the screen printed metallic flecked cork surfaces, to the reworking of the archival paisley design (Angel) that my Grandfather designed for one of my Father's collections. Each design was created with my passion and joy for wallpaper, its history and its future, in mind. I hope you enjoy my First Edition.
In Carl Robinson Edition2, the great city of London is my muse. I have been inspired by the contradictions of traditional and modern design that define this great city. My new signature designs of bold watercolor florals, exotic paisleys, shimmering silks and detailed embroideries have been inspired by and reflect the cosmopolitan allure of the city. From the quiet luxury of Saville Row, to the exuberance of Soho, and the sleek modern architecture of the Square Mile, this collection embraces an urban aesthetic that is as unique as London itself. I hope you enjoy my Wallcoverings in your home, as much as I enjoyed creating them for you.
I have created the Carl Robinson 3 Specialty Papers collection to honor the past, reflect the tradition and unveil the artistic processes that are used in designing wallpapers. I have worked in collaboration with highly skilled and respected artisans to preserve the beauty and continue the tradition of handcrafted wallcoverings. The hand-painted patterns are a true work of art. Each one is artistically rendered, individually hand screen printed on 50-foot long tables and finished to a durable, beautiful, high end product for the wall. The imported grasscloths and silks are rotary-printed using advanced print technology, to create a look based in tradition yet relevant to today’s interiors. The inspired embroideries are hand worked and printed on the finest custom colored non-woven paper in a stunning neutral palette. The use of metallic threads makes these pieces truly special. The combination of classic screen-printed damasks on specialty cork and mylar substrates was created to celebrate the wallcovering looks of a bygone era, in a new and interesting way. This collection represents my passion and desire to create wallcoverings of the highest quality and innovative designs for the most discerning of interiors.
Carl Robinson Edition 4, Atmosphere. is a collection of Wall Art Papers and Coordinating Wallcoverings that strive to capture the inherent and sometimes hidden beauty of our everyday landscape, and design objects of times past. I have been inspired by the colors in oxidized metals, the texture of distressed paint and even the graphic simplicity of a bicycle wheel. Steam engines, a vintage camera, and a retro radio are all hallmarks of our common heritage that we can relate to and treasure as memories of our collective past. The art in this portfolio of designs are images that will tell the stories of yesterday in today's interiors.
My intention for the Carl Robinson Brand is to set new standards of creativity in design and quality of product. The 5th Edition in the series, REFLECT, is the culmination of experience and commitment to the artistic process of creating wallcoverings that are uniquely my own. My design process is based in tradition, and I am always striving to synthesize my experience with new technology to harness inspiration and create product that is innovative and beautiful. The process in creating the luxurious, opulent look for Reflect is as special as the product itself. Each design was selected from a portfolio of classic antique textile documents and recreated for wallcoverings. Non-woven mylar with a luminous metallic finish was chosen for the substrate and the individually hand-mixed inks are printed with a raised-surface to add sumptuous texture and create a matte and shine effect. The seductive color palette of rich golds, shimmering silvers and minerale neutrals give a spectacular finish to this statement collection.
Inspired by the inherent beauty of antique textiles, Carl Robinson Edition 6, Venetian Damasks, is the result of a creative collaboration between myself and the artisans of a centuries old, family run Italian textile producer in the Lake Como region of Italy. These specialty silk wallcoverings pay homage to the preservation of tradition and the centuries of knowledge passed down through generations. The designs are produced on jacquard looms, where each thread is individually controlled to produce intricate weaves that will reflect and absorb light, and then backed with paper for ease of installation. I have always looked to Italy as a source for endless inspiration, and this collection reflects the tradition of the region and the creative spirit of the people.
Rotary Screen printing is one of the oldest, most traditional methods of printing wallpaper. The inspiration for Carl Robinson Edition 7, Monte Carlo, is to push the boundaries of this traditional printing method and infuse it with modern ink technology to create one of a kind patterns full of technical challenges that require thoughtful design and expert production. This collection strives to make any space a showplace by incorporating precious metallic inks, layering of raised surface textures, applied crystals and classic design motifs to build designs that are extremely effective in imparting a sense of richness, glamour and luxury. The patterns range from classic French florals drawn from archival reference, to palatial be-jeweled damasks and delicate feathers made with SWAROVSKI® ELEMENTS. The limited color palette of rich and pale golds, pretty lilacs with silver and the dramatic combination of red and gold provide an array of choices to create a quiet shimmering space or a dramatic centerpiece for the home. A rich, successful, one-of-a-kind collection, Monte Carlo encompasses all that is best in wallcovering design.
Feminine and alluring, The Romantique Collection, Carl Robinson Edition 9, is inspired by the enchantment and beauty of nature. I commissioned original watercolors painted by the hands of artists, each with their own particular style and expert talents, and the result was a collection of floral designs emanating a traditional style yet reinterpreted for modern times. The over-sized scale of the designs, metallic grounds, and contemporary coordination all work together to make a sophisticated and modern approach to decorating.
With every collection, I look for inspiration that is rooted in classic and timeless design, yet has relevance and meaning for today's interiors. My approach to the design of the "Island" collection is to offer papers that will stand the test of time and create an upscale tropical interior for your home. If your look is bold and eclectic, or traditional and elegant, embrace this classic look and turn your home into an oasis of style.
Capri is the inspiration for my latest collection. The patterns reflect the luxurious bohemian environment, grand Roman villas, and the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. This light and airy collection has its roots in Italian design, and reflects the current culture of Capri with its luxury hotels and designer boutiques. Highlights of beautiful shimmering damasks, a classic Greek key, and my signature peacock & feather designs embellished with glimmering hand-applied SWAROVSKI® ELEMENTS are offered in a beautiful array of neutral colors. Printed by traditional rotary screen process, the unmatched quality and unique patterns of Capri are produced to the highest of standards.
Art is a means of self-expression, while design strives to serve a purpose. In this collection, Edition 12 “Art”, I want to celebrate the uninhibited self expression of modern art yet still create a viable resource of patterns that will provide a unique starting point for an ultra sophisticated interior. Painterly brush strokes, graphic layouts, and a bold use of color are transformed into design elements used to express a confident statement of style. Whether you favor abstract, industrial minimal, sketchbook florals, or expansive ombre stripes, these unique and cutting edge designs will surely appeal to the artist in you.
Modern forms and sophisticated techniques come together to create Milan, the fourteenth edition from Carl Robinson. Inspired by Italian design, Milan is one of the leading creative centers in Europe for both design and fashion, the collection embodies the high style and classic sensibilities of the city. The artwork in this collection is composed of both clean lines and modern textures to create depth. Milan’s opulent wallcoverings will immerse your space with saturated colors and metallic finishes bringing another level of luxury to your home.
Inspired by nature, my latest collection ‘Sea Glass’ uses both a color palette and organic elements found from the earth. Sea Glass is a multitude of colors ranging from blue greens, earthy browns, yellows, and reddish coppers that highlight the extraordinary intensity of tones found in nature. Distinct designs of tossed florals, ivy trails, landscapes of spruce trees paired with textural wood grains and oxidized metals all combine to complete the lifestyle of the collection. Sea Glass is a harmony of sophisticated textures and elegant metallic inks to bring design to life. Inspired by nature to energize your home.
